Senior Day Program Opens December 5th
Open House for Public Tours on Thursday December 1st

NEWPORT – Northeast Kingdom Homecare, Inc. has scheduled a public introduction of its new group adult day program, The Meeting Place. The public is invited to an Open House on Thursday, December 1st from 4 until 7 pm. The facility will be open for clients on Monday, December 5th.

Northeast Kingdom Homecare, which already provides in-home caregiving services, is expanding to provide group day service, as well. The Meeting Place is in an historic building in downtown Newport which will provide a homelike atmosphere for seniors.

Many children who care for aging parents describe it as something they are happy to do. But caregiving can become an exhausting 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week job for even the most loving and dedicated family member. The Meeting Place is designed to provide care to seniors, while giving the family a chance to have a break, work regular jobs, and care for their own needs.

“We want a space that encourages movement and interaction,” explains Jane Josselin, Program Director. “We have an art room, music area, game and dining space, as well as a quiet room. Even the kitchen will be available as an activity center for seniors who want to cook for their peers.”

Seniors who come to the Meeting Place will be provided with breakfast and lunch. A variety of activities will be designed to keep them engaged and entertained. The homelike setting creates separate rooms in which clients will develop friendships while participating in activities they choose such as singing around the piano, discussing the day’s news, or helping make Christmas decorations. There is room for relaxation, watching television, or playing cards.

NEKHC has restored a building once used as a Baptist Church. The warm colors, attractive furniture, and hardwaood floors are enhanced with antique photographs loaned from the Richardson Cartee collection.

An Open House is scheduled from 4 until 7 pm on Thursday, December 1st. There will be refreshments, music, and tours of the facility. The company will publicly thank those who have made the facility possible including Chittenden Bank and the Vermont Community Loan Fund, as well as others who have made donations including The Old Stone House Museum, Richardson Cartee Collection, Millesole Glass Tile, and Robert Chimeleski.

Seniors seeking care and activity, as well as their families, are encouraged to visit anytime. The Center will be open from 7:30 am until 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and there will be half-day, full-day, and weekly rates.
