The Meeting Place Feeds its Clients Well
NEWPORT - When Debra Hunt started The Meeting Place in 2006, one of her goals was to serve meals to seniors that were less traditional, more fun, and nutritious. Cook, Eric Smith fulfills her vision with gusto.
"We are accustomed to thinking about senior meals as being shepherd's pie, meat loaf, and macaroni and cheese," says Hunt, "but today's seniors are more sophisticated in many ways, and they welcome variety and even adventure in their eating."
On any given weekday, fifteen to twenty seniors attend The Meeting Place, a state-certified adult day service. Early arrivals get a traditional breakfast. At lunch time, they are served a full meal, often serving as their main meal of the day and providing the nutrition that they may otherwise lack at home.
Sometimes meals correspond with holidays or themes. Corned beef for St Patrick's day, barbecued chicken for the Fourth of July, and a Hawaiian pork dish as the centerpiece for a Luau. Birthday parties always involve cake, and Smith decorates the cakes to honor the special guest.
"We serve a balanced meal every day," says Smith. "Usually, lunch includes meat or fish, potatoes, rice or pasta, vegetables, milk or juice, and dessert."
Smith is constantly trying new menus. Pushed to experiment, he uses the Internet to find new recipes. A recent favorite was a seafood dish: Mahi Mahi with a Pepper Cilantro Pesto. Served to clients and staff, there were no leftovers. Desserts range from traditional cakes, fruit crisps, or more exotic treats like Tiramisu.
The Meeting Place currently has openings in its schedule for Seniors who need daytime care or who could benefit from socialization. As a state certified program, TMP is prepared to work with clients with a variety of needs and health issues.
