Meeting Place Seniors at the Barton Fair

NEWPORT - Who said older people can't still have fun? For seniors who attend The Meeting Place adult day service, Friday was Barton Fair day, and being a kid again was part of the plan.

"The weather was great, our clients were ready, and we had a great time," said Hannah Cairelli, LPN and member of The Meeting Place staff. "Part of staying healthy means getting out there and doing things that make you laugh."

About a dozen seniors and four staff members toured the fairgrounds, ate fair food, listened to music, and even took a ride or two. While days at The Meeting Place may include balanced meals, a day at the fair has to include some fried dough, onion rings and Italian sausage.

Debra Hunt, Director of The Meeting Place, encourages these kinds of activities. "Whether it’s a trip to the fair, getting lost in the corn maze, a Hawaiian Luau or a birthday party, we are building new memories and reminding our clients that they are never too old to have a good time," she says.

The Barton Fair has become an annual routine for The Meeting Place and one of the events clients look forward to. The staff makes arrangements for transportation, using private vehicles in combination with RCT. At the end of the day, everyone goes home a little more tired than when the day began.

The Meeting Place currently has openings in its schedule for Seniors who need daytime care or who could benefit from socialization. As a state certified program, TMP is prepared to work with clients with a variety of needs and health issues. For individuals or family members who are interested in getting involved with this program, please call 334-7604 for more information.
